Orange Scones

Carol Nelles made these wonderful scones for Kevin’s 50th birthday party weekend. They have become a family favorite thanks to Meg our family baker. They are wonderful to bake at the cottage. This recipe makes 8 scones.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons of grated orange peel
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 egg slightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Directions

  • Heat oven to 400F.
  • Lightly grease cookie sheet.
  • In a large bowl,combine flour, sugar, baking powder and orange peel. Using pastry blender or fork, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add milk and egg. With fork stir until mixture leaves sides of bowl and soft dough forms.
  • On floured surface, gently knead dough 10 times. Place on grease cookie sheet.
  • Roll or pat into 6 inch circle.
  • Sprinkle dough with 1 tbsp of sugar.
  • Cut dough into 8 wedges. Separate slightly
  • Bake at 400F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Serve warm.
